Assessments

For students on our degree programmes, to progress through the course, you will need to submit and pass assessments. This section will outline important aspects of our assessment process, but full details can be found in our Academic Regulations & Policies on our website here.

Summative Assessment

Summative assessments are the assignments that contribute to your overall mark for that module. This may be a film, a screenplay or an on-set assessment and will be outlined in your module guide with the learning outcomes you will achieve and the assessment criteria.

You will have at least one of these assessments per module, with some modules having two. These are designed to measure your learning at specific stages of the course, and the marks and feedback you receive will indicate where you can improve.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessments, although they do not contribute to your overall grade, are designed to assist you in learning more effectively and showing areas of improvement before your final submissions. Formative assessments will usually be smaller tasks with the goal of engaging you with important aspects of the learning outcomes.

Late Submission

Central Film School accepts late submissions up to a week after the deadline (as stated on the Google Classroom and the Module Guide). However, late submissions will be capped at the minimum pass mark (40% for Undergraduates and 50% for Postgraduates). In exceptional circumstances, outlined below, this cap can be removed.

Non-Submission

If you do not submit for a summative module assessment or submit more than one week after the deadline, you will receive a mark of 0. In this situation, you will be reassessed.

Reassessment

In the case that you do not receive a passing mark (less than 40% for undergraduate and less than 50% for postgraduates - this includes non-submissions), you will be reassessed. Reassessments will often take the form of an alternative assessment brief and are also capped in the same way as late submissions.

Retakes

If, after you have been reassessed, you have still not received a passing mark for a module, you will be able to retake the module at the next available opportunity.

This would include attending all scheduled sessions and completing all necessary assessments. There is normally a cost involved for this, and more details can be found in our Tuition Fee Policy on our website here.

CATS and Progression

At Central Film School, we utilise the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) system and all our modules will have a CATS total tied to them. A BA (Hons) programme has 360 CATS and an MA programme has 180 CATS.

For Undergraduates, to progress through the course and onto the next level of study, students must complete a certain amount of CATS. In short, students can only be trailing (have failed) 60 CATS of learning to continue their progression on the course. If you exceed this, you will have to retake a module to continue your studies with us.

For Postgraduates, as there is only one level of study, progression to each module is not halted, but, if you do not pass every module, you will not be awarded a Masters degree.

Exit Awards

We understand that, if a change in personal circumstances arises, you may not be able to complete your programme of study with us. In light of this, we offer exit awards if you have achieved the requisite number of credits at the appropriate level.

Submitting Assessments

All of your assessment briefs and submission points will be made available via Google Classroom.

Your assessment briefs in your module guides will outline the required file type and format for your submissions. You should pay close attention to this when submitting video files. However, for written assignments and presentations, these should be submitted as Google Docs or Slides.

If we are unable to open your files because you have used a different format or file type, this could be considered a non-submission.

Mitigating Circumstances

Central Film School understands that at certain points during your studies with us, personal circumstances or situations may arise which mean you will be unable to submit or attend an assessment.

In these instances, you will be able to submit a mitigating circumstances claim. If approved, this may result in an extension to your deadline, an alternative assessment or the cap being removed from a late submission or reassessment. You can view further guidance on the Student Experience Hub here.
