Code of Conduct

Understanding key expectations, academic integrity, and community standards for a thriving creative environment

Whether you are stepping into a studio for the first time, collaborating on a script, or editing your latest project, our community thrives on creativity, mutual respect, and professional standards. The Code of Conduct establishes the foundation for a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment across all our campuses, digital spaces, and production sets.

Here is a quick overview of what the Code of Conduct means for you as a student and how it supports your creative journey.

Respect and Professionalism

At CFS, every student and staff member is part of a shared responsibility model. We are all accountable for creating an atmosphere where everyone can learn and create freely. Key principles include:

  • Dignity & Respect: Treating fellow filmmakers, tutors, and staff with courtesy at all times.
  • Zero Tolerance for Harassment: We champion equality, diversity, and inclusion. Discrimination, bullying, or sexual misconduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Academic Freedom: Expressing diverse perspectives and engaging in robust debate legally and respectfully.
  • Safety First: Protecting the physical and emotional well-being of yourself and others across all activities.

Academic and Creative Integrity

As an artist and scholar, your work should reflect your genuine effort and originality. Being honest in your academic and practical work means proper referencing, avoiding plagiarism, and adhering to research ethics.

If your film shoots, screenplays, or dissertations involve sensitive subjects, you must secure formal ethical clearance before filming or data collection starts. Always ensure participants and actors give informed consent.

Production Safety, Facilities, and IT Use

Access to industry-grade equipment, editing suites, and studios is a vital part of your education. With these resources comes the responsibility to handle them carefully and safely:

  • Filming Protocols: Due to the nature of film production, strict protocols apply when using replica weapons, staged law enforcement scenes, or public filming spaces. You must follow safety guidelines to protect the public and our community.
  • Digital Civility & Security: Use school email and IT networks responsibly. Illegal sharing, copyright infringement, misrepresentation, or commercial exploitation on school systems is strictly forbidden.
  • Care for Property: Misuse, defacement, or theft of school or personal property is taken very seriously and may involve police referral alongside internal disciplinary actions.

Attendance and Engagement

Filmmaking is inherently collaborative; your presence matters to your peers and your team. You are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and participate fully in your programme.

What happens if your attendance drops? If your attendance falls below an acceptable level, you will be invited to a Student Engagement Meeting with the Student Services Team to offer support. Continued unexcused absence after this meeting may result in non-academic disciplinary steps, including potential withdrawal from your programme.

Safeguarding, Health, and Wellbeing

Your health and safety are paramount. CFS enforces a strict smoke-free policy across all premises (including vaping and e-cigarettes). The possession, consumption, or distribution of illegal drugs is prohibited and leads to immediate dismissal. Alcohol is only permitted at formally approved school events.

If you face personal difficulties, mental health challenges, or disagreements, help is available. While you are responsible for coming forward when you need support, staff members are ready to listen and guide you toward pastoral, financial, or academic assistance.

Transparency and Raising Concerns

CFS values institutional integrity. If you observe corrupt conduct, maladministration, or serious misuse of resources, you are encouraged to report it to management in confidence. Similarly, if you ever feel wronged or face disciplinary proceedings, procedures exist to ensure fair investigation and grievance resolution.
